Amidst in bloom Acacia trees, President Benigno S. Aquino III joined the employees and guests of the exploration arm of the Philippine National Oil Company for their 35th anniversary. The festive event was held in the company premises inside the complex of the Department of Energy in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig last 15 April 2011.
Secretary Rene Almendras of the DOE and PNOC EC’s Chairman and CEO, Gemiliano C. Lopez, Jr. welcomed the President to the festive event. During the event, Sec. Almendras and Mr. Lopez presented to the President a check for the dividends of the national government from retained earnings of the PNOC EC in the amount of Php3 Billion, the highest dividend remittance of the PNOC EC in its history. In his speech, Secretary Almendras sees this record remittance as a model for fiscal responsibility for all GOCCs under the energy department.
As part of the anniversary celebrations, Mr. Teresito Morales and Mr. Edrito Achay, who both work for the underground coal mine of PNOC EC in Zamboanga Sibugay, received special citations from Mr. Lopez for their “dedicated service to the country despite their hardships while working 300 meters under the ground”. The mine workers have worked on the coal mine of the company for almost two decades and have survived several mine accidents during this time. Lopez capped the citation saying, “truly, these workers represent the best of the PNOC EC, courageous and persevering”.
Former President and CEO of the PNOC EC, who retired after 28 years in public service in 2004, Rufino Bomasang, likewise received a special citation for his contributions to the company, especially in the “birthing of the Philippine natural gas industry and the spearheading of the development of indigenous coal”. Lopez hailed Mr. Bomasang as a “true public servant, honest and competent”.
In a special message, Secretary Almendras expressed his gratitude for the strong support of the PNOC EC for his projects for the country, particularly in his aim for energy independence and sustainability. Secretary Almendras cited the company for its readiness to take on the challenge of building the infrastructure for the distribution of natural gas for the public transport and the ground work for the country’s strategic petroleum reserve. Secretary Almendras also expressed optimism that PNOC EC will continue to take the lead in pursuing exploration projects in the country’s oil fields, starting with drilling project in the East Sabina block (SC 63) set this September. Secretary Almendras recognizes the critical role which the PNOC EC will play for the country’s energy requirements for the next 35 years.
